How to Brush Along the Gumline Without Scrubbing Too Hard

Prevention · · Tareen Dental

A gentle brushing technique can help you clean thoroughly while caring for your gums. If the bristles flatten against your teeth, changing your technique may be more useful than buying a stronger toothpaste. The goal is to disturb the soft bacterial film on the teeth while treating the gum tissue gently.

Proper Brushing Technique

Give the gumline its own attention

Choose a soft brush with a head you can manoeuvre around your back teeth. With a manual brush, angle the bristles towards the border where tooth and gum meet, then use small, controlled movements. Work through the outside, inside and chewing surfaces rather than repeatedly scrubbing the front teeth. For powered brushes, follow the manufacturer's technique instead of adding forceful manual strokes.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends gentle cleaning, fluoride toothpaste and regular cleaning between teeth. Its advice focuses on regular, gentle plaque removal. Oral hygiene guidance.

Make the routine easier to repeat

Try dividing your mouth into four sections and following the same route each time. Use this as a helpful guide, and take the time you need to reach each area. Pay attention to the tongue-side surfaces and the last tooth in each row, which can be easy to miss when you are rushing.

If you cannot comfortably reach an area, bring your toothbrush to your next visit. A hands-on demonstration can be more helpful than trying to follow a diagram. People with limited hand movement may benefit from a different handle or brush design.

When brushing discomfort deserves a check

If brushing leaves an area sore, sensitive or repeatedly bleeding, our team can help you find a comfortable approach and check the cause. These symptoms can have several causes, including inflammation or an unsuitable technique. Keep your touch gentle and arrange an assessment so the advice fits what is happening in your mouth.

At Tareen Dental on Lauzon Road, a dental hygiene visit can include a review of the areas you find difficult to clean. Contact our East Windsor team to arrange a visit and bring the products you currently use.
