Caring For Your Dental Implant

Daily cleaning and regular reviews help you care for your dental implant and the tissues around it. The gum and bone around the implant need just as much attention as the crown on top.

Quick reference

  • Brush around the implant twice a day with a soft brush — the implant crown itself won't decay, but the gums and bone around it can become inflamed
  • Floss daily, or use a floss specifically made for implants, an interdental brush, or a water flosser to clean beneath and around the crown
  • Avoid biting hard objects (ice, pens, fingernails) — they can chip the crown or stress the implant
  • Keep your six-month hygiene visits
  • We use special instruments that won't scratch the implant surface
  • Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant problems — if you smoke, please tell us so we can plan extra check-ins
