After Your Bone Graft
A bone graft was placed today to rebuild bone where it was missing — this prepares the site for a future implant or supports an area around your existing teeth. The grafted material is fragile in the first few weeks, so a gentle approach matters.
Quick reference
- Bite firmly on the gauze for 30–45 minutes
- Some pinkish saliva for a day is normal
- To protect the graft, do not rinse, spit, suck through a straw, or smoke for at least 24 hours — pressure can dislodge the graft
- You may notice tiny granules in your mouth in the first few days
- This is normal — not all the graft material will stay in place
- Cold pack for the first day; warm salt-water rinses from day 2 onward
- Eat soft, lukewarm foods for the first 24–48 hours
- Avoid pressing food directly on the graft site
- Take any prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed — finish the full course
- Brush your other teeth carefully; avoid the surgical site for a few days, then brush gently around it
